Alma Sheryl Scott

Alma “Sheryl” Scott was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher.  She passed away at her home on April 7, 2019.  Mrs. Scott was born August 19, 1940 in Paintsville, Kentucky. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, George Gary Scott, of Catlettsburg.  She is also survived by two loving daughters, Kimberly S. McCann (Michael) of Ashland and Alison R. Bays (Marty) of Ashland. She devoted her time and attention to caring for, teaching, and loving her three surviving granddaughters, Kayla McCann Marty (Jeffrey), Megan Raye Bays, and Sara Marissa Bays.  It was one of these grandchildren who first gave her the affectionate name, “Mammy” which many of her friends and family knew her by. Mrs. Scott graduated from Marshall University with a bachelors degree in education and from Morehead State University with a masters degree in education reading specialty with an endorsement for gifted education. Mrs. Scott taught elementary school and retired from Cannonsburg  Elementary in Boyd County where she was also an active and successful academic coach. She loved seeing her students excel in and out of the classroom.  She was a life long member of Cannonsburg Trinity Methodist Church where she also served as Treasurer for many years. Sheryl Scott was preceded in death by her parents Ted and Willa Ruth Hensley; two brothers, Robert Hensley and Tom Hensley; sisters, Patsy Sweitzer and Henrietta Hall. She is also survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Lemaster, Mary Combs, Brenda Lemaster (Terry), Debra Gauze (Jim), Nancy Gauze, Terri Reeves, Connie Frazier (Tom) and a brother-in-law, Donald Scott (Maxine).  She is also survived by many special nieces and nephews.  She will be missed by many but most of all by her family who she cherished with all of her heart. Visitation for Mrs. Scott will be Wednesday, April 10, 2019 from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at Steen Funeral Home 3409 13th Street, Ashland, KY  41102.  Funeral services for Mrs. Scott will be Thursday, April 11, 2019 at 1 P.M. at Cannonsburg Trinity United Methodist Church, 11620 Midland Trail Road Ashland, KY  41102.  Burial services will follow at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Catlettsburg.  Pallbearers will be Mike McCann, Marty Bays, Jeff Marty, David Mayhew, Mike Moore, Tom Frazier, Ed Roberts, and Donnie Scott.
