"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest". Donald R. Sorrell, 82, of Ashland, Kentucky, entered into that blessed rest on July 23, 2020 surrounded by family and the prayers of many friends. Don was born January 29, 1938 to Ollie Lee Sorrell. He was raised by his grandparents, Andrew J. & Erie Ann Sorrell. He was a 1956 graduate of Boyd County High School. He began his banking career in October that same year as a teller with Second National Bank, Ashland, KY. He later was elected Assistant Cashier and promoted to the Budget Loan Dept. In 1969 he joined Kentucky Farmers Bank, Catlettsburg, KY where he spent 28 years as Vice President & Branch Manager until his retirement in 1998.
He was a member of Meade Station Church of God and served on various boards and committees with the church. He was chairman of the Boyd County chapter for Infantile Paralysis. He was a member of the Ashland Jaycees. He helped to organize and was the first President of the Boyd County Kiwanis Club. He served on the Federal Bureau of Prisons Community Relations Board. He was a Kentucky colonel. He served ten years in the Kentucky Army National Guard.
Don is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances Marie Cooksey Sorrell; a daughter, Linda (Bobby) Tackett; a son, Robert (Bertonya) Sorrell; six grandsons, David (Jenna) Tackett, Jason (Sara) Tackett, Daniel Sorrell, Adam Sorrell, Michael Sorrell, & Joshua Sorrell; & four great grandchildren, Carson Tackett, Chloe Tackett, Aubrey Tackett, & Katie Tackett, and a host of extended family and friends.
A memorial service with limited seating will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2020, at Steen Funeral Home, 13th Street Chapel with Reverend Robert Jordan and Pastor Chris Murphy officiating. To view the service via livestreaming, please contact the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday and one hour before the service on Saturday.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. The family asks that anyone paying their respects at the visitation or funeral wear an appropriate mask and practice social distancing.
