Tribute

Dorothy R. Scholtens, 92, of Ashland, peacefully passed away and was gathered to her people Saturday, January 11, 2019 to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Dorothy was born February 10, 1926 in Ashland, KY a daughter of the late Henry and Anna Mae Gilpin Franz. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husbands Frank E. Riddle and John W. Scholtens, her daughter Kay Wells, brothers Ray Franz, Ed Franz, Walter Franz, Charles Franz, Elmer Franz and Art Franz, sisters, Edna Ford, Pauline Abney, Eleanor Franz, Marie Glass, Florence Price and a son-in-law William “Bill” Baker Burke.
Dorothy was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church and was active with the Christ Crusaders Sunday School Class and the church choir. She was also a member of the South Ashland United Methodist Church Wesley Sunday School Class.
She was co-founder of the Ashland Twin Mothers Club and a member of the Three Arts Club.
She worked in the family business, the former Gilpin-Franz Greenhouses and Florists in Ashland.
During World War II she worked at the Clayton Lambert Shell Factory and also worked at Owens-Illinois Glass Company Plant in Huntington, WV. She volunteered her time with the KDMC Auxiliary.
Dorothy loved working in her yard especially in her flower and vegetable gardens. She enjoyed playing scrabble and painting. Planning parties and entertaining her Sunday School Class were activities that gave her much joy.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters Nancy Burke of Paris, KY, Mary (Carl) Warnock of Ashland, Kim Gordon of North Middletown, KY, brother Riley Franz of Ashland, sister Geneva Morrow Wilson of FL, stepson John R. (Kathy) Scholtens of port Orange, FL, stepdaughter Mary Lynn (Clark) Floyd of TN, grandchildren George Daniel Gordon, Tonya Renee Gordon, Carl Nathan (Alicia) Warnock, Sarah Ann (Jordon) Small, Robert Stephen (Jessica) Wells, Casey Edward (Tanya) Wells, Denver Warren (Amy) Wells, 14 great grandchildren, son-in-law Bob Wells and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends
Visitation will be Sunday evening from 5-7 PM with funeral services at 1:00pm Monday at the Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel. Pastor Keith Katterheinrich will officiate.
Friends may call during the hour preceding the services at 1:00pm.
Burial will be in the Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
