Dorothy Jean Wheeler Simmerman, 93, passed away at Harbor Health Care in Ironton, Ohio on May 3, 2018. She was born in Ashland, KY, on September 22, 1924 to the late Celsus C. and Samantha Shortridge Wheeler. She was also preceded in death by her husband, J. Willis Simmerman in 1985 and a sister, Coleen Sandridge.
She was a beloved former AP History and Government teacher at Boyd County High School, at which she taught for 36 years. She was a member of the American Association of University Women and a member of the South Ashland United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her sons, Mark E. Simmerman of Ironton Ohio; Steve Simmerman and wife Toby of Ashland, KY; a daughter, Cheryl Miller and husband Greg of Houston, TX; Grandchildren, Sarah Heck and husband Adam of Lexington, KY, Hannah Smith and husband Travis of Ashland, KY, Kristin Miller of New Orleans, LA, and Brandon Miller of Austin, TX; great grandchildren, Jane Abigail Heck and Samuel Ethan Heck; and a special sister-in-law, Skippy Simmerman of Ashland, KY.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Monday, May 7, 2018 at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel, with Reverend Keith Katterheinrich officiating. Burial will follow in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel on Monday, May 7th from Noon till service time at 1:00 PM.
