Tribute

Evelyene “Evie” Marie Poulouin Fleming, 87, of Ashland, KY, took the hand of Jesus and went to her Heavenly home on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at the Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
She was born September 25, 1931, in Nashville, TN, to the late Francoise and Ruiea Tyer Poulouin. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lane Giles Fleming, on July 9, 2018, just 2 months shy of their 64th wedding anniversary.
Lane and Evie’s love for each other was undeniable. They could always be found holding hands, even to the embarrassment of their children in younger years! However, this attribute was later appreciated as a testament to their commitment and devotion to one another.
A farm girl at heart, Evie enjoyed sharing stories about growing up on the grounds of the iconic Plainview Dairy in Louisville, known for their beautiful Jersey cows and delicious milk. Evie’s father, Frank “Shorty” Poulouin, immigrated in his teens from Jersey Island in the English Channel and was revered for his knowledge of the breed and his skill in managing the herd.
Evie attended Anchorage High School in Louisville, KY, and later followed in her older brother’s footsteps to graduate from Jeffersontown High School where she played a variety of sports and had many friends.
She then entered Kentucky Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse in 1953. She loved nursing, though her career was cut short when she met sweet, handsome Lane Fleming on a blind date just before she graduated, and they married and had 3 children in less than 5 years!
As much as Evie loved being a nurse, her greatest love was raising a family of four children and pouring into their lives. She led her family by example, sharing what is truly important in life: a relationship with Jesus Christ and treating others with kindness, respect, and appreciation.
Evie’s greatest desire in life was to be a good mother, and her four children can attest to the fact that she accomplished her goal. They have fond memories of homemade brownies and cold milk after school, round sandwiches or holiday cookie-cutter shaped sandwiches in their packed lunches, croquet tournaments, treasure hunts, and board-game-a-thons coordinated by their fun-loving Mom. Books, lessons, music, and projects were all a fun part of their growing up years. And they were blessed with parents who made great sacrifices to give them as many opportunities as possible.

Evie’s caring heart and infectious personality drew people to her, and she never met a stranger. Throughout her life, she has sent countless greeting cards, always including a personal note to each recipient.
Her warmth and creativity made her an ideal leader. During her children’s school years, she was active as a homeroom mother, Girl Scout leader, and band parent. She even served as Area Coordinator for the Wilderness Road and Ken-O-Valley Girl Scout Councils, training and inspiring other troop leaders.
After her own children were grown, Evie poured her heart into the next generation of children as co-manager of the nursery at the Ashland YMCA for several years, where she had a great impact on the lives of children and their moms.
Evie served as president of her Sunday School class for many years at Pollard Baptist Church, and loved encouraging and teaching other women. She later managed the church nursery where those young children -- now young parents themselves -- still recall how she made Bible stories come alive in their young minds. She is currently a member of Garner Baptist Church, with her two oldest children.
In addition to her beloved husband, Evie is preceded in death by her only brother, Joseph Francis Poulouin, and sister-in-law, Mariann Graff Poulouin, of Wilmington, DE. She is survived by four children, Bryan Giles Fleming and Susan Victoria Fleming, both of Ashland, Diane Marie Fleming Barker (Steve) of Tulsa, OK, and Bradford Lane Fleming (Dana) of Columbia, SC, one dearly loved granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Fleming of Columbia, SC, and several nieces and nephews through her brother.
Evie will also be greatly missed by her “adopted” granddaughter, Ashley Palmer Slevin of Shadyside, Ohio, and her amazing “nonpareil” caregiver, Steve “Curtis” Wurts of Ashland, who also cared for her beloved Lane.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday May 25, 2019 at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland. Rev. Gary Arrington and Rev. Jon Black will be officiating. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery following the service.
Visitation for family and friends will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2019 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Evie’s favorite charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105, or www.stjude.org/donate.
