Joseph Henry “Joe” Charles, Jr. 86, of Ashland, died Saturday, August 8, 2020, in the Community Hospice Care Center.

He was born April 15, 1934, in Huntington, West Virginia, a son of the late Joseph Henry Charles Sr. and Eula McClure Charles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Lucy Calhoun Charles in 2019; and three siblings, Vernon Charles, Sally Cromwell and Edna Belle Harper.

Joe was a graduate of Huntington East High School and attended Marshall University. He was a longtime member of Wildwood Church of God and served honorably in the United States Army. Joe was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite and York Rite Mason of Kentucky. He was a member and Past Master of Poage Masonic Lodge 325 F&AM and was a member of the El Hasa Shrine Temple and served on the Board of Directors Emeritus of the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Lexington, KY. Joe was a devoted husband, father and papaw.

Those left to cherish his memory include a son, Joe Charles and wife, Ginger of Ashland; daughters, Mary Charles Neill and husband, Jeff of Ashland, Cathy Charles Sparks and husband, Mike of Ashland; his grandchildren, Sarah (Jeremy) Holbrook, Laura (Anthony) Ferguson, Jeffrey (Destiny) Neill, Joel (Tori) Sparks, Rachel (Jeff) Poarch, Timothy (Katie) Neill, great-grandchildren Katelyn Ferguson, Mya Ferguson, Carson Holbrook, Lucy Ferguson, Andrew Neill, Dylan Holbrook, Jeffrey Thomas Neill, III, Dominic Sparks and a host of extended family members and dear friends.

Due to the going Covid 19 pandemic, a private service will be held under the direction of Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel by Pastor Steve Harris. Burial will follow in the Ashland Cemetery.
