Lydia Margaret Morgan

July 19, 1935 ~ June 30, 2019 (age 83) 83 Years Old

Tribute

On Sunday, June 30, 2019, Lydia Margaret “Tootsie” Morgan, née McClelland, 83, completed her life’s journey after a mercifully brief stroke-related convalescence which ended at Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, Kentucky. She was a graduate of Ashland High School, Ashland Junior College and Morehead State University. She was devoted to her family and throughout life made many sacrifices for them that could never be repaid. Beyond her love of family, she was deeply passionate about the teaching profession. Her long career began in a one-room schoolhouse and saw many changes in our institutions of public education as she passed through Bear Creek Elementary, Ironville Elementary, Andis Elementary, Monitor Elementary and Deering Elementary.

The daughter of a Baptist lay leader, she held fast a deep faith and for most of her adulthood attended Rock Camp United Methodist Church where she served several years as Treasurer. She had a particular love – some might say obsession – for the joys of the Christmas season and for many years the holiday saw over 15 trees decorated in her home, many with themes that changed from year to year.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Stephen D. Morgan, her parents Edgar and Nancy (Moyer) McClelland, four brothers (Tom, Harold, Clyde and Don), five sisters (Mildred, Nancy, Mary, Dorothy and Martha) and other family and friends. She is survived by her son, Stephen D. Morgan II, of New Orleans; two brothers, Curtis “Cork” McClelland of Boyd County and Jack McClelland of Ashland; many nieces, nephews, and in-laws; and numerous others drawn into her circle of loved ones as a consequence of her generous and caring nature. The latter group includes her hundreds of former students whose ongoing lives and successes were a great source of gratification to her.

Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 6 at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland, Kentucky. There will a short visitation period starting at 9 a.m. that day and a longer visitation also held at the funeral home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 5. Burial among her family and next to her husband at Bayless Cemetery in Boyd County will follow the services. For those wishing an alternative to flowers, the family suggests a gift to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Community Hospice, 1480 Carter Avenue, Ashland, KY 41101
