MALAKAI DE’KING MCCOY passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 11, 2022. He was born February 19, 2018 to his mother, Chantel D Massey, and the late Lawrence McCoy, at Kings Daughter’s Medical Center in Ashland, KY.
Malakai was loved by so many! He attended Ashland Headstart where he was cherished by his teachers and other students. He was christened by Pastor JD Crockrel at Christ Temple Church on April 15, 2018 surrounded by family. Pastor Crockrel adored Malakai, often referring to Malakai as his “little buddy” in contrast to the nickname “Big Guy” which was often repeated by his baby sister, Majesty, who in a very tiny voice would say “Hiii Big Guy” upon seeing him.
Malakai was especially loved by his great-grandmother, Lula Troxler, affectionately known as “Granny”, who held him near and dear to her heart. Everyone knew that he was “Granny’s Baby”, as he had his great-granny wrapped around his finger just as he is wrapped around her heart. From the time he was born, he has held a special place with his Granny, and always will. Malakai loved her just as much! You could tell by his smile which would light up the room when Granny was around. We will always remember that smile!
Malakai will be deeply missed by his entire family for the sweet baby boy that he was. In addition to his mother, Chantel Massey, and his devoted Granny, he leaves behind his maternal great-grandfather, Calvin Troxler, Sr; his maternal grandmother, Latasha Troxler; his maternal grandfather, Andrew Massey; his B-Pop, Melvin Hill; his paternal grandparents, Ebony Boyd and Lawrence McCoy; three sisters, Majesty Lashaun McCoy, Mi’asia McCoy, Ky’rah McCoy, and one brother, Lawrence D McCoy Jr; an aunt, Tashae’ Massey (Shon); an uncle, Malik Massey; a great uncle, Calvin Troxler, Jr; two great-aunts, Olanda Thomas (Landon) and Barbara Scott; special cousins, Serenity Thomas, Amir Turner, Marie Troxler-Griffith (Joshua Griffith and Joshua II), Tre’ Troxler, Alauna Troxler, Alexis Troxler, and Timothy Barnes; an honorary aunt, Kenya Clemens; and a host of extended family, friends, and his Ashland Head Start family.
Services will be held Friday, May 20, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Christ Temple Church in Ashland, KY with burial following in Ashland Cemetery. Visitation will begin at the church on Friday at 11:30 a.m.
Steen Funeral Home is both honored and privileged to be entrusted with the arrangements.
