January 12, 1929 ~ July 30, 2020 (age 91)


Mary Elizabeth Reed “Liz” Dawson, 91, of McCormick, SC, formerly of Russell, KY, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2020 at the Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood, SC, following a brief illness. Liz was born January 12, 1929 in Elsie (Magoffin County), KY, a daughter of the late Campbell Smith and Easter Caudill Reed. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, William Wesley “Barlow” Dawson; brothers, Jennings, Hager, Ramey, Eli, Odell and Woodford Reed; sisters, Modie Reed Howard and Monnie Reed Roark.
Liz was a graduate of Salyersville High School and earned her bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University.
Liz and her late husband Barlow were longtime members of Bridges Christian Church in Russell and also members of the El Hasa Shriners Motor Corp. For a short time she worked as a key puncher at the former Ashland Oil, Inc. executive offices in Russell. She was co-owner and bookkeeper of the Kilbourne Machine Shop, a family business she and Barlow had the opportunity to acquire and operate for many years.
Survivors include her sons, Mark R. Dawson and fiancé Lisa Preston of McCormick, SC, Lennie W. Dawson and wife Valerie of Hastings. MN; granddaughter, Amber Dawson; sister-in-laws, Garnett Reed and Ruth Reed; and a host of extended family and friends.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon Monday, August 3, 2020 at the Ashland Cemetery by Chaplain Jimm Smedley. There will be no visitation.
