Michael Joe Fields, 77, passed away on Monday, February 17, 2020. He was born at home on November 7, 1942. He was preceded in death by his parents Grace Blackburn Fields Armstrong and Homer Fields, his stepfather Willis Armstrong, and brother in law, Bill Chaney.

Michael is survived by his wife Margaret Fields and his sisters Billie Nelson and husband Frank, Ruth Chaney, and Janet Ingles and husband Donnie; step children, Dr. Michael Godschalk and wife Dorothy of Richmond, VA, Maggie Nunan and husband Pat of Bluffton, SC, Susan Cremeans and husband Bob of Ashland, Ky, Herbert “Herb” Godschalk, lll and wife Sue of Staunton, VA, Catherine Spurlock and husband Clarence of Myrtle Beach, SC, Patricia “Trish” Hickey and husband Ed of Lexington, KY, John Godschalk of Huntington, WV, Teresa Godschalk of Waxhaw, NC; thirteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Michael graduated from Boyd County High School. He was a US Army Veteran, serving as a tank operator in Germany. He also served his country in the Army Reserves and the National Guard. Michael retired after 30 years of employment with Special Metals Burnaugh Division.

He was a great family man and loving husband. He enjoyed reading and jogging, and was an avid Kentucky Wildcats fan. Michael will be remembered for his love, kindness and patience. He will be greatly missed by friends and family alike. The family is grateful for the care Michael received from the staff of the Community Hospice Care Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Michael’s memory to the Community Hospice Care Center of Ashland.

Funeral services will be held Noon Friday, February 21, 2020 Steen Funeral Home 13th Street Chapel with Deacon Bob Maher officiating. Burial will follow in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery, NE where military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army and American Legion Kenova Post 93.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
