Virgil Edward Hanshaw
February 9, 1939 ~ September 6, 2023 (age 84) 84 Years Old
Virgil Edward Hanshaw, 84, of Westwood, passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
He was born February 9, 1939, in Louisa, Kentucky. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Cordilla Hammonds Hanshaw; brothers, David Hanshaw, Don Hanshaw, Curtis Hanshaw and Billy Paul Hanshaw; sisters, Rethal Hanshaw Smith, Nancy Hanshaw Davidson and Dilla Hanshaw Garner; and a sister in law, Rosalie Johnson.
Virgil retired following a long career in construction with Ross Brothers and Davis and Burton. Following retirement, he worked an additional ten years as a consultant for Birmingham and SMI Steel. Virgil was extremely smart, feisty, tough as nails and as hardworking as they come. He was a beloved boxing coach and mentor for 50 years with the Westwood Boys Club. Within his own family he coached 9 Golden Glove championship wins and a National Junior Olympic Boxing champion. Beneath the tough exterior he had a heart of gold. He and his wife, Leona enjoyed many years of traveling. He was devoted to his family and always supportive. He enjoyed summer days by the swimming pool with his grandchildren and always had a ton of candy for the kids. To know him was to love him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 55 years, Leona Johnson Hanshaw; sons, Charles Edward Hanshaw (and wife, Sandy), Tom Hanshaw (and wife, Mindy) and William “Bill” Hall (and wife, Cindy); sister, Sarah Meyers; Jennifer Walsh Tietje whom he loved as a daughter; brother in law, Nelson Johnson; nine grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren with one on the way; and a host of extended family members and dear friends.
